7/8/25 Hibbing Speedway Regular Race with Mod 4s

The penultimate Tuesday scheduled at the Hibbing Speedway for the 2025 season fired off on July 8th with Mod 4s making their first appearance in Hibbing in over 20 years.

The WISSOTA Modifieds started the night with a 10-car, 20-lap feature. Jeff Wood used his Hibbing Speedway experience to power around the high side and lead the first 4 laps. However, Bob Broking would find himself passing Wood around the high side of turns 1 and 2. Broking had won the most recent Modified feature at the track and looked to go back-to-back. A pair of 22s in Tyler Kintner and Josh Beaulieu fought it out behind Broking. Kintner, the track point leader for the Modifieds, would hold off Beaulieu, who was making his first Hibbing visit of 2025. Broking continued his hot streak and led the rest of the way to claim Hibbing win number 2 of the season.

Next up were the visiting WISSOTA Mod 4s in a 15-lap affair. Chad Funt would take off to an early lead from his pole starting position. However, 68-year-old Dean Larson would cross the start/finish line in first place by lap 3. The chase was on, as heat race winner Dustin Holtquist found himself in 2nd after lap 4. However, Larson set a torrid pace, and all he had to do was run a clean race to the checkers to claim the win. He did so, with Holtquist and Funt following behind. In Larson’s enthusiastic post-race interview, he mentioned that he missed the last Mod 4 race at Hibbing, which he believed to have happened around 2002 or 2003.

The third race on the schedule was the WISSOTA Late Models with a 20-lapper. Skeeter Estey jumped out to a strong start while the always fast Kevin Burdick and Kyle Peterlin battled it out for second. A caution reset the field and Burdick knew what he had to do. He hooked up his 30 machine to the high side of the speedway and made his way around Estey to grab the lead. Burdick would set sail at a comfortable pace with a clean line around both sides of the speedway, returning near the bottom side of the racetrack. Peterlin would power around Estey and chase Burdick for the remainder of the race, but he could not quite catch up to the smooth Burdick. Johnny Broking spent a majority of the race ripping the lip and would end up nipping Estey at the line for third place.

Next came the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, boasting the largest car count of the evening with 19. Visitor Joey Jensen got some good redraw luck and started on the inside of row 2. The veteran driver got up on the wheel right away and was in the lead by the end of the lap. Everybody else would chase Jensen from there on out, as the experience of the pilot of the SNS Motorsports machine proved to be the x-factor in this 20-lap endeavor. Jensen dominated the race until a lap car almost took him out, which scuffed up some sheet metal on the number 30 machine but thankfully not any worse. Jensen still would end up winning by 4.5 seconds over another visitor, Gary James Nelson, and regular Andy Davey.

The endcap on the night was the 20-lap feature for the WISSOTA Super Stocks. Multi-time track champion Tristan LaBarge and perennial front runner Dalton Carlson would match up on the front row of this one. LaBarge would claim first place on lap 1, but a tight race car would result in Carlson inheriting the lead on the next lap. It wasn’t over quite then, though, as LaBarge continued to try and fight through the handling issues. Doug Koski also threw his hat in the mix for a podium spot as he took over the 3rd position on lap 5. A late-race restart put Carlson in the catbird seat with LaBarge and Koski ready to pounce if any mistakes were made. However, Carlson drove a smooth final portion of the race, completing his goal of grabbing the checkers at Hibbing in a race with LaBarge in competition. Koski would finish with the silver medal ahead of LaBarge. LaBarge barely beat out his cousin Andy LaBarge for the final podium spot.
