6/28/25 Hibbing Speedway Regular Race

The points season at Hibbing Speedway continued on Saturday, June 28th in 4 WISSOTA divisions. The Midwest Modifieds were scheduled off for the night while track conditions improved and tight racing ensued around the 1/4 mile speedway.

The WISSOTA Hornets took to the track for a 12-lap contest. For a majority of the race, it was a 3 dog contest between Pierz’s Colton Lodermeier, Brainerd’s Russell Kiker Jr., and Kettle River’s Nikota Larson. Larson would emerge late with the race lead and claim victory in his first trip to Hibbing for the 2024 season. Kiker and Lodermeier followed.

Next up on the docket was the WISSOTA Late Models in a 20-lap battle. Hibbing’s Kyle Peterlin took advantage of a pole redraw, taking the lead early ahead of fellow front-row starter Kevin Burdick. Burdick would do all he could while chasing Peterlin but could not quite catch up. Peterlin was able to bring it home on top, with Burdick and Jeff Massingill rounding out the podium.

The WISSOTA Super Stocks would contest a 20-lap fight next, with Tristan LaBarge and Trevor Arens leading the field to green. LaBarge won the first two features of the season, but did not run away with the feature event by any means. Early challenges came from the likes of Austin Blom, Dexton Koch, and Rick Simpson. By Lap 7, LaBarge continued to lead, but a different LaBarge had jumped into the second spot: Tristan’s cousin, Andy. Andy had gone through his fair share of struggles to begin the season, but was finally putting together a strong run. The race was littered with cautions, but a green-white-checkered finish produced one of the closest finishes we will get all season. In a good, hard-nosed battle, Andy edged out Tristan at the line for the win by only 0.012 seconds! Simpson would complete the podium.

The WISSOTA Modifieds would round out the night with 20 laps of their own. Defending track champion Andrew Inman would lead early, but he surrendered the lead to Hibbing’s Tyler Kintner by lap 8. Inman would hold onto the second spot for 4 more laps before spinning out and heading to the back of the field. This left Bob Broking, Mervin Castle III and Jeffrey Wood to battle it out behind Kintner. Broking used the high side of the speedway to his advantage, falling to 3rd on lap 14 but remaining in 2nd otherwise. Broking would get a huge run of steam with 2 laps to go, passing Kintner and being declared the official race leader of lap 19. Broking and Kintner gave it their all and raced to the second photo finish of the evening, where Broking edged Kintner out by 0.258 seconds. Wood finished 3rd, 2.5 seconds behind Kintner and 0.053 ahead of Castle.

On Tuesday, July 1st, the Iron Man Late Model Invitational returns with a $5,000-to-win headliner for the WISSOTA Late Models featuring former NASCAR racer Ryan Newman in competition. The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds and WISSOTA Hornets fill out the undercard for the Iron Man with another crucial night of national points on the line.
